Every Allied soldier under the rank of Sergeantwas forced to work 12 hour shifts, six days a week, cuttingtimber, quarrying stone, carving ice from frozen rivers andclearing bombsites. It drove the soldiers to the brink, inwhich survival was a daily trial. Many starved to death ordied from disease, others were killed in accidents or at thehands of their guards.
